Developing EASA-compliant fatigue training for Virgin Atlantic crew
In 2014, Virgin Atlantic awarded Clockwork Research a contract to develop a programme of fatigue training for crew, instructors and office personnel. Our brief was to develop fatigue training that was fully compliant with the EASA FTL regulations, tailored to the Virgin Atlantic operation. The fatigue training also had to reflect the feel and style associated with the Virgin brand and provide a truly engaging learning experience for Virgin personnel.
Clockwork Research conducted workshops with key stakeholders from the operation, to better understand the particular needs of the airline. The workshops identified contributors to fatigue experienced by Virgin flight crew and cabin crew. These were then addressed through the fatigue training.
Working closely with Virgin Atlantic’s Safety Team, Clockwork Research created two online fatigue training programmes that met the airline’s regulatory needs, tailored to reflect the characteristics of the crew groups working for Virgin. The online programmes were supported by a series of training workshops providing CRM instructors and rostering and scheduling personnel with the knowledge to enable them and Virgin Atlantic to meet their responsibilities for managing crew fatigue under the new EASA regulations.
Client feedback on the fatigue training
“We embarked on a complex project with Clockwork and the team at Clockwork were receptive to our ideas and made sure they immersed themselves in our own company culture. This relationship building gave us the ability to give open and honest feedback from both parties which resulted in an excellent programme that our cabin crew could use that was appropriate to their roles and easy to relate to.”
