Implementing an FRMS can involve a significant cultural shift for an organisation, particularly if existing fatigue management has been based on simple adherence to hours of work limits. Consequently, the first step to a successful FRMS is to prepare the organisation to be ready for this new approach.
First, those who will be involved in the day-to-day running of the FRMS should receive training. Clockwork deliver training solutions for all parts of the organisation, including: training for senior management on fatigue risk and the benefits of FRMS; guidance for those who will implement the FRMS; and training for employees on identification and management of fatigue.
One of the first steps recommended by ICAO is a gap analysis, to identify existing procedures and elements of the Safety Management System that could be modified to suit the needs of a FRMS, as well as gaps that will require new procedures to be developed. Our many years of introducing FRMS into organisations means that we are well placed to assist operators to implement a gap analysis, as a result of which the operator will have the basis for an FRMS implementation plan.
Clockwork personnel also facilitate hazard identification workshops, working with key stakeholders in the organisation and helping them to identify features of their operations that are contributing to fatigue and which their FRMS should address.
