Managing fatigue at Akyem, Ghana

The Clockwork Research fatigue auditing team has completed a 2-week project in Ghana, where they conducted a fatigue risk site assessment at the Akyem gold mining operation.

Dr Paul Jackson and Anna Hemp were invited to undertake the assessment by the Newmont Mining Company. The assessment, which took place at the Akyem site – where Newmont has been mining gold since 2013, involved conducting interviews with management, supervisors and equipment operators working in the surface mine areas of the operation, and the development of a fatigue action plan for the site management to implement.

A key feature of the work was the assessment of the site’s compliance against the Newmont Standard on Fatigue Risk Management.

The project is part of a major fatigue management initiative by the Denver, Colorado-based mining company. Clockwork Research has already completed similar assessments at Newmont operations in Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Nevada, and South America.
