The traditional approach to managing fatigue is through prescriptive limits that specify the maximum number of hours that can be worked within a set period. In the aviation industry, operators that wish to work outside these limits are typically required to run a scientific study to demonstrate that their proposed work practices have at least an equivalent level of safety to standard work practices.
However, designing and running a successful scientific study that will provide the evidence demanded by regulators requires specialist scientific knowledge, research expertise and can be a time consuming process. Clockwork are experienced at designing successful scientific studies and are regularly called upon to coordinate scientific studies for airlines in order to build safety cases to be presented to regulators.
Clockwork use regulator-approved methodologies and state-of-the-art technologies to monitor activity and sleep patterns across the study period, and to measure cognitive performance before, during and after tours of duty. We undertake all the necessary statistical analysis and produce reports that meet the needs of operators and regulators. We are also experienced at presenting these findings to the authorities on behalf of our clients.
