Fatigue Safety Cases and Scientific Studies

Our Service

A safety case can give you an edge over other operators within a highly competitive industry. A successful application will enable you to fully benefit from new aircraft that can fly for longer, unlock new routes or schedules or protect existing operations from emerging regulations that are unnecessarily restrictive.

We have experience and a working knowledge of the regulatory fatigue safety case application process, for example defined by ICAO, EASA and the FAA, and can assist you with every step necessary to submit a successful case.

Our approach

A successful fatigue safety case usually consists of:

  • A well designed scientific study of the deviation or derogation you are seeking. The study must have integrity, be a true reflection of the operation and include appropriate statistical analysis. We will help you with every step of the scientific study, including design and the selection and utilisation of data collection materials. We are experienced in the use of sleep diaries, Actigraphy, performance tests, surveys, focus groups, fatigue report and incident databases, bio-mathematical fatigue models and measures of workload.
  • An effective FRMS to ensure that, in the long-term, any derogation or deviation that is awarded is associated with an acceptable level of fatigue risk. You may find it useful to undertake a Fatigue Risk Management Diagnostic (FRMD) to evaluate the maturity of your FRMS. The Diagnostic results in an FRMS Implementation or Improvement Plan describing the steps that you need to take to build a system that will provide the necessary support for your fatigue safety case application.

Throughout the application process, we can assist with the regular updates that you will need to provide to your Regulator.

Titan Airways engaged with Clockwork to assist in the development of training to meet both the regulatory needs of EASA-FTL and the unique fatigue management challenges that we face in an ad-hoc operating environment. Clockwork’s approach to the task was methodical and also sympathetic to the diverse operation types we have. The communication from the Clockwork team was excellent throughout the project including ongoing support after release. The final training product truly combined the theoretical and practical aspects of fatigue management with the Titan operating environment and ethos.open quote

We embarked on a complex project with Clockwork and the team at Clockwork were receptive to our ideas and made sure they immersed themselves in our own company culture. This relationship building gave us the ability to give open and honest feedback from both parties which resulted in an excellent programme that our cabin crew could use that was appropriate to their roles and easy to relate to.open quote

Luxair has built a strong link to Clockwork over the past years. Not only did they help us to develop successful fatigue surveys with our cabin and cockpit crews but they also played a major role in the development of our fatigue reporting, our FRMS training and the analysis of our scheduling practices. Clockwork's staff were always open to our ideas/thoughts and with their professionalism and dedication helped us achieve our goal of mitigating fatigue related risks through our SMS.open quote
