Clockwork helps Midland Metro to industry safety award
Midlands-based light rail operator, Midland Metro, have received a High Commendation for Most Significant Safety Initiative at the 2010 UK Light Rail Awards. The award recognises their groundbreaking work with Clockwork Research in implementing the UK light rail industry’s first Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS).
The state-of-the-art system, based on years of scientific research into human fatigue, has been designed to provide comprehensive fatigue risk management for the company’s entire operation and incorporates training, a fatigue reporting process, hazard detection, risk assessment, and ongoing monitoring.
One of the system’s key innovations is Rail Maestro, a web-based rostering application that automates scheduling and fatigue modelling to predict likely fatigue outcomes output the safest and most practical rosters.
While Rail Maestro enhances day-to-day fatigue management, the programme also provides managers with monthly reports on key performance indicators, with all the data required to track and manage fatigue risk exposure over the long term.
With roster automation and improved oversight of operational fatigue risk, both safety and commercial benefits have been significant since the Midland Metro FRMS came into place, which, as this award suggests, has set the pace for the rest of the light rail industry.
